Is your AC constantly running?  When your AC unit is broken and doesn’t shut off automatically, there’s something wrong, and it’s best to get to the bottom of it before your electricity bill skyrockets.

Here are some things to check for when you find your AC unit is broken, constantly running and does not automatically shut off when it reaches your desired temperature.

Check the filter.

When your filter is full of dirt and debris, theflow of air coming out of your AC unit is restricted. When the air doesn’t flow over the coils, your air conditioner can’t remove the humidity and cool the air. Even if you think you just changed your filter, check it again. If you have indoor pets, hair, dust, dander and otherallergens can quickly clog your filter, even if you just replaced it. You also need to check the filter on the outside of the AC unit of your home. If your unit is surrounded by trees and bushes, this could definitely be the culprit of a clogged outdoor filter. Another thing to keep in mind when checking your air conditioner filters is to make sure that you are using the right kind of filter. Filters with a lower Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) are best.

Leaky ducts or a faulty thermostat

If your air-conditioner filters are clear, yet your AC unit is still broken and constantly running, you could have leaky ducts or your thermostat may be broken. If you live in an older building or home, you could be losing cold air through leaks in your ductwork or through old ductwork that has not been properly insulated in many years. Another reason AC units do not shut off, is when the thermostat is broken. If your thermostat is not registering the proper temperature of your room, your unit will continue to run. You can check this by holding a thermometer up to your air conditioning vent and double-checking that the temperature of the thermometer matches the temperature registering on your thermostat.

Your unit is old and needs to be replaced

It’s always a good idea tohave your air conditioning unit serviced by an HVAC professional at least once a year to ensure your unit is running efficiently and staying in tip-top shape. But you should not be paying expensive HVAC service fees over and over again throughout the year. If you find that your HVAC tech is now on speed dial, you need a new AC unit. If your unit is over 10 years, it’sworth the investment to purchase a new AC unit for your home. The units on the market today haveadvanced technology that makes them energy-efficient, saving you money on electricity every month.
