What is R-22? Well, it’s not the cute, talking robot from Star Wars; that’s R2-D2. R-22 is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerant that’s been the most widely used refrigerant for heating and cooling products in the U.S. for over 40 years. R-22 is used in domestic air-conditioning units like window AC, split AC, packaged AC and in a number of central air-conditioning systems. It is also found in food storage and service items like display cases, ice machines and transport refrigeration systems.

The Clean Air Act authority of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has discovered that this coolant causes significant damage to the environment by depleting the ozone layer because it contains chlorine. In order to stop the damage to the environment, they have developed an “aggressive linear phase out” of this refrigerant to completely remove it from the U.S. by January 1, 2020.

The R-22 Phase-out:

In 2010, the EPA announced that all manufacturers of heating and air-conditioning units were prohibited from producing new HVAC equipment that uses R-22. Starting in 2015, the EPA reduced the max volume of imported R-22 refrigerant from 51-million pounds to 22-million pounds. Last year, it was reduced to just 9 million and this year, in 2019, the amount of imported R-22 will decrease to a mere 4-million pounds. By January 1 of 2020, the EPA will no longer allow R-22 imports into the U.S.

What does this mean for you?

The R-22 phase out means that you should be looking into replacing your air-conditioning units that are roughly 10 years of age or older with a newer version that does not need R-22 to function. There are a variety of other environmentally friendly air-conditioning systems that you may choose from.

Don’t wait until the last minute.

In 2020, R-22 will be gone. Don’t try to replace it. Some people have tried to replace R-22 in old air-conditioning units with other refrigerants. This does not work. It only decreases efficiency and increases your costs. It’s best to create a plan to replace your old unit with a new one.
